About OCYM UAE Zone
The Orthodox Christian Youth Movement, guided by the principles of worship, study, and service and serving as the dynamic driving force and central hub of the Malankara Sabha, commenced its activities in the early 1970s within the UAE, initially focusing on parishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Subsequently, with the establishment of congregations in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Al Ain, the members actively arranged joint meetings.Around 300 individuals attended the conference on July 2, 1989. During the Eid holidays in 1990, the then President of OCYM, LL HG Geevarghese Mar Osthathios, spearheaded a one-day conference at Sharjah centered on the theme “Come Holy Spirit, Renew the creation.”
During that period, activists aimed to foster collaboration and cooperation among youth movement members at the regional level in the UAE. Consequently, on September 28, 1990, the vicars and OCYM office bearers from the Parishes of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai gathered at Sharjah Parish and appointedRev Fr CM Kuriakoseas the first Zonal President of OCYM and MrBabu Kurian of the Dubai Unit as its first Zonal Secretary.
The Zonal Annual Conference has been held at one of the Orthodox Churches in the UAE, typically on or around December 2, the UAE National Day since the formation of the Zonal Committee.These gatherings, structured as family conferences, providing a forum for members of the youth movement to assemble as a cohesive family.
Initially, the UAE Zone fell under the jurisdiction of the Delhi diocese. However, with the restructuring of dioceses, the churches in the UAE have been divided into Delhi, Bangalore, and Brahmavar dioceses. Despite this division, the youth movement units work together as a cohesive UAE zone, promoting collaboration among themselves.After 33 years of growth and progression, the twenty-ninth annual conference, centered on the theme “Rise, Let us go” (Mark 14:42), is being led by the Zonal Committee, headed by Zonal President Rev Fr Eldho M Paul and Zonal Secretary Mr Shaiju Yohannan.
